JOUAV explains RTK and PPK workflows for drone mapping

RTK and PPK apply drone positioning corrections at different stages of a survey.

The article was updated on September 3, 2026.

RTK applies positioning corrections during flight, while PPK applies them after the flight.

RTK requires uninterrupted communication between the drone and a GNSS base station. The article says positioning data is available for mapping software after landing if signals remain constant.

The article identifies flat, open terrain as suitable for RTK operations, where trees and mountains do not obstruct the communication signal.

In a PPK workflow, the base station and rover record raw GNSS data for later processing. Software then applies corrections after fieldwork ends.

Under ideal conditions, the article describes PPK and RTK accuracy as equivalent. It also warns that interruptions in RTK’s real-time correction link can affect positioning consistency.
