Spectral resolution describes an instrument's ability to distinguish adjacent spectral features. When absorption features lie close together, the instrument's resolving capability can affect how clearly those details are observed.
When other conditions are similar, a smaller spectral resolution value allows finer spectral changes to be observed. Materials with clearly different spectral curves may already be distinguishable at the available resolution. Narrow absorption peaks and subtle curve changes require closer attention to resolving capability.
Wavelength coverage also matters. If a camera does not cover the wavelength region containing the target feature, fine spectral resolution cannot compensate for that missing coverage.
Selection begins with the sample, the relevant wavelength bands and the spectral details that need to be observed. Imaging conditions, experimental conditions, other parameters and actual samples should then inform the configuration.
